Frequently Asked Questions - URJ-UCCS

Why submit to the URJ-UCCS?

All articles published in the URJ-UCCS will be indexed in major web searched engines such as Google Scholar, making it accessible for potential employers and/or graduate programs. Having a published article also serves as a possible resume builder. In addition, students who go through the process of research-from drafting ideas to publication-prepare themselves for more advanced research at the graduate and professoriate level. The URJ-UCCS provides UCCS undergrads an opportunity to develop and hone their research, writing and reviewing skills at an early stage.

Who can submit to the URJ-UCCS?

Any undergraduate student who is currently enrolled at UCCS may submit research for review. Former UCCS undergrads are also welcomed to submit as long as their work was completed while enrolled as an undergraduate. The work of non-UCCS students will only be considered for special journal issues.

Can I have a co-author for my work?

Yes, you have as many co-authors as you feel necessary, but the primary author (the one who did the most writing) should be listed first. If there is no clear primary author, just list the authors as you like. Primary author must fit the above criteria to be an author for the URJ-UCCS; co-authors can be anyone, such as but not limited to faculty, graduate students and non-UCCS students.

What types of papers can be submitted?

Papers from any area of research are invited. This includes, but not limited to literature reviews, case studies, primary research from the humanities, social sciences and sciences. If you have a question about the suitability of your research area, feel free to contact the URJ-UCCS manager, Tabatha Farney at tfarney@uccs.edu.

How do I submit my work?

All submissions are made through the URJ-UCCS website: http://ojs.uccs.edu/index.php/urj/about/submissions#onlineSubmissions. To submit to the URJ-UCCS, potential authors must register on the site. After you login, click on the Author link to begin a new submission. Any works submitted must be properly cited using either the standard APA, MLA, or Chicago style format. Other formats may be used with prior consent of the URJ-UCCS editor. It is also highly recommended that a teacher or advisor look over your work prior to consideration.

How often can I submit a paper?

Any UCCS undergraduate can submit one paper per semester. Summer is counted as one semester, so that is three papers a year. If you happen to submit multiple papers at one time, the Journal Manager will select one of your submissions to be reviewed and notify you of the submissions that will not be reviewed at that time. You can always resubmit them at the start of the next semester.

When is the deadline for the next issue?

The next volume of the URJ-UCCS will be published early next fall. No official deadline has yet been set.

How will I know if my work has been accepted?

You will be notified via email that your paper has been accepted for publication. Due to the irregular publishing schedule, works may be accepted but not published right away. Authors will be notified when their works will be published.

I don't know how to cite a source. Where can I get information about citing sources?

Information on citing sources, as well as any assistance proofreading and formatting potential submissions may be found at the UCCS Writing Center (Columbine Hall, Room 316), or through their website at http://www.uccs.edu/~wrtgcntr.

Can I make revisions to my work after it has been submitted?

Since research is an ongoing process, revisions to the work can certainly be made after submission, up to the point that the article is published. Once your paper is submitted, we ask that you wait until feedback from reviewers before heavily revising your work. Review of your work and any alterations will be performed as a collaborative process with the author and the URJ-UCCS reviewers and editor.

Can I submit my work to other publications if it is published in the URJ-UCCS?

Authors published in the URJ-UCCS retain the right to submit their manuscript to any other publication after it appears in the URJ-UCCS. However, if that paper appears in the URJ-UCCS, professional-level publications often consider that manuscript as already published, so you may want to revise/update your work prior to submitting. This would be an excellent opportunity to work with faculty or other potential co-authors to revise your original work and research for submission to another journal.

I would like to help publish the URJ-UCCS. How do I join the URJ-UCCS editing process?

Currently, all editing is performed in collaboration with the UCCS Honors Program. This function may be opened to more students in the future, so please stay tuned.

Where do the hard copies of the URJ-UCCS get distributed?

There are no hard (or print copies) of the URJ-UCCS yet. It is under consideration, but there are no print copies available. The URJ-UCCS will always be availabe as a free, online journal to reach the widest readership possible.
